¨Guiding is essentially about a genuine enjoyment and an honest appreciation of, and dedication to all the many faces nature has to offer us. It is indeed a privileged occupation. Imagine being paid to take people out into the wilds of Africa!"

An extract from the book 'A Guides guide to Guiding'- Garth Thompson

The Course

Short Term Options

Bushwise in conjunction with GVI and their partners can offer safari field guide courses in South Africa ranging from 14 to 28 days.

No previous experience is necessary and training is very hands-on, starting with the absolute basics. The training camps are located in or near to established 'big 5' game reserves where students are immersed in the sounds, sights and smells of the bush. Typically, days are a balance between walks, drives and theory sessions/ lectures. Subject matter is varied and may include anything from animal tracks and signs to safe rifle handling, climatology to 4x4 driving techniques. Courses are fully supported by FGASA (Field Guides Association of South Africa) and qualification at various levels is possible.
