The week started off with our final four lectures for the Bushwise course, Taxonomy, Fish, Human habitation and Conservation management. Mixed emotions were being felt by everyone, being relieved that lectures and tests are finished, but also the realization that our time at Bushwise is almost coming to an end, with only two semesters left to go.
On Tuesday after our fourth lecture we had a bit of time off, and it was back to the bush for Game Drives. Everybody headed into the bush with big smiles and was ready to see what they can find and talk about. Our student drivers showed us from a range of things, from animals to trees! They shared their knowledge and interesting facts about every sighting we came across. For example, did you know there is a tree called the Marula tree with green when unripe and yellow when ripe fruits, animals love them and we do too! They are safe for humans to eat and they are really good especially if you have a sweet tooth!
Wednesday started off with a BANG! Practical shooting and dry runs were finally here, in preparation for our practical assessment to obtain our ARH (Advanced Rifle Handling) certificates. We spend the whole day doing dry runs to improve our speed and technique and with target practice to improve our accuracy. The next day, in between studying, we continued with target practice and dry runs. Dry runs involve the trainers teaching you how to aim, load and reload the rifles as fast as possible but also as safely as possible. The trainers are really helpful and patient with us, and the really know what they’re doing! Their confidence makes you feel more confident.
Friday came and we knew that tomorrow is the big one, our four last tests! Studying, rifles, studying and more rifles then… The trainers brought out the lion charge simulator! Everyone was very excited to get their go at the simulator. We heard so much about it and it was finally time to show what we got! After all the dry runs and lion simulator practices had finished, it was time to get our heads in the books for our last tests!
On Saturday we wrote our last tests and then we had the weekend off after a fun but tiring week!
