The Mahlala Bush Campus and Reserve
Students based at the Mahlahla Bush Campus will carry out their practical training on Makalali Private Game Reserve, a spectacular 26,000ha Big five wilderness reserve in the Limpopo province. Other featured reserves include Pidwa Wildnerness Reserve and the beautiful Makutsi Reserve. The Greater Makalali Private Game Reserve (GMPGR) is situated west of Kruger National Park and promises intimate wildlife encounters and an ideal training ground with lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo and other characteristic species are cheetah, hyena, giraffe, zebra and kudu. Visit this page for more information on the reserve.
The Mahlahla Bush Campus is approximately a 50 minute drive from Hoedspruit.
Accommodation & facilities at Mahlahla Bush Campus
Accommodation for the field guide training course is on the Bushwise Mahlahla Bush Campus, on general game land just outside the gates of the Makalali Game Reserve in a rural, yet, comfortable rustic and idyllic bush setting.
Rooms are shared, usually with two students to a room. Students have access to all basic facilities, a social area, swimming pool, full lecture facilities and resources. The campus has electricity and access to internet and all meals are provided during the course semester periods. Please keep in mind, we are based in rural South Africa, our electricity and internet access can be intermittent, which is all part of the experience of living and learning in the African wilderness. Impala, wildebeest, waterbuck and a large variety of bird species are regular visitors to the campus dam – situated in between the living area & lecture room. Other species such as Honey Badgers and Civet are seen almost every night, with the occasional visit from Pangolin and Leopard too!
Juice, tea and coffee are provided on the course. A laundry service is provided weekly for uniforms and bed linen. Access to the laundry facilities is provided for personal washing.
Sabrina Columbo – Manager at LEO Africa Wildlife research
“For our project we are always looking for high quality, committed, passionate and serious staff members/interns. Bushwise has always been able to provide us with good students (some of them were offered a job after the 6 month placement), competent, serious and driven by the passion of conservation.”
Chris Turtle from South Africa
“Bushwise has helped me by giving me the knowledge and skills to work in the guiding industry. My instructors were always willing to help with advice and even coming to assess me for further qualifications as I progressed with my guiding career.”
