Field Guiding Careers
For most people, waking up in the African bush and spending the day tracking wild dogs, identifying the sound of a nightjar, or interpreting the tracks of elephants in the sand, is a distant dream.

A career as a professional safari guide trades the ordinary routine of a corporate job for a fulfilling life in the wild. It’s a profession where you become the voice of the natural world, translating animal behaviour, ecology, astrology, geometry, and more to travelers from around the globe.

There is a wide variety of careers you could follow as part of this pathway – including Professional Safari Guide, Nature Guide, Field Guide, Luxury Safari Lodge Guide, Head Guide, Safari Coordinator, Private Trails Guide, Commercial Lodge Field Guide, Lead Safari Driver-Guide, Lodge Guest Experience Host, Specialist Guide, Wilderness Safari Leader, and Eco-Lodge Resident Naturalist.
This career path is perfect for:
-
Conservation or science graduates: Turn your love for animals, nature, or farming into a practical trade, using broad operational exposure to choose your specific path in the sector.

-
Career switchers: You can add practical field capabilities to your environmental studies, gaining heavy-duty practical skills, like advanced rifle handling and game capture logistics that traditional universities cannot provide.

-
School leavers: Many matrics skip the traditional lecture hall for a disciplined vocational track that builds rapid personal maturity, independence, and long-term self-sufficiency.

-
Field guides: If you’re an existing field guide looking to build a thriving career, it’s important to ensure you continuously upskill by adding experiences like trail guiding to your CV.
