The foundation for a wild career
Is your goal to become a safari guide, wilderness guide, or wildlife guide? The IFGA Professional Safari Guide course (6–12 months) is the most comprehensive and immersive course available, perfect for anyone pursuing a professional guiding career or seeking a meaningful sabbatical or gap year experience.
Course overview
Picture this: you’re behind the wheel of a 4x4, crossing a sandy riverbed as your guests whisper in excitement. A flash of movement in the trees – could that be a leopard? Later, everyone’s watching the sunset with a cold drink in hand. Just another afternoon spent sharing your love for the bush.
The IFGA Professional Safari Guide Course (6–12 months) is your first step into that world. It’s designed to turn passionate nature lovers into skilled, confident professionals ready to work in the safari industry. You’ll learn everything it takes to be a world-class guide – from practical fieldwork and guest experience to ecology, hospitality, and communication. And if you really excel, you can qualify for the prestigious IFGA certification at no extra cost.
At Bushwise, this course goes a step further. When you sign up for the 12-month programme, you’ll receive CATHSSETA NQF4-level training at no additional charge – something most other providers charge extra for. After you’ve completed a year of guiding experience, you can return to complete your final practical assessment and earn your official qualification.
Before you even arrive on campus, you’ll complete a short online learning module and write the NQF2 Nature Site Guide exam. This way, everyone starts with the same foundation and can jump straight into more advanced NQF4-level material once training begins. Haven’t passed the exam before arrival? No problem – you’ll get a printed manual on campus and another chance to write it. Just note that classes are taught at the NQF4 level, so they won’t line up exactly with the NQF2 exam content.
If you choose the 12-month option, you’ll also complete an optional six-month work placement, gaining valuable real-world experience at leading lodges and reserves like Thornybush, Timbavati, Makalali, and Kapama. Some students even head further afield to Thailand, Madagascar, or Costa Rica. Many Bushwise graduates have gone on to guide across Africa and beyond — from Namibia and Zambia all the way to Patagonia and the USA.
Qualifications
All Bushwise students, whether enrolled in the 6- or 12-month course, work towards the CATHSSETA Nature Site Guide (NQF4) qualification. This is the professional standard required to guide in South Africa and demonstrates your advanced understanding of guiding, ecology, and guest experience.
Before arriving on campus, you’ll complete an online learning module and write the NQF2 Nature Site Guide exam. This ensures everyone starts with a solid foundation before moving into NQF4-level content once you arrive.
If you’re on the 12-month course, your six-month work placement counts towards the year of guiding experience needed to complete your NQF4 practical assessment and earn the full qualification. Once you’ve gained the remaining experience, you can return to Bushwise to complete this assessment — at no additional cost. This is exclusive to Bushwise; other providers typically charge extra for this next-level evaluation, but here it’s built into your programme from July 2026.
Bushwise is directly accredited by CATHSSETA, and we’ll handle your registration once you’ve passed your assessments. Alongside your NQF4 qualification, you’ll earn additional certifications such as IFGA designation (for those who meet the standards), Track & Sign, Advanced Rifle Handling, First Aid, Reptile Handling, and more.
See the Qualifications tab above for the full list.
Why study with Bushwise?
Bushwise was founded in 2006 by a passionate conservationist who, after a long and rewarding career in the field, saw a growing need for professional, qualified field guides to help protect and sustain our natural environment.
That same passion continues to guide us today. Since our early days, we’ve been committed to producing top-tier graduates for the safari industry, known for their skill, ethics, and deep respect for nature. It's this dedication that drives us to constantly refine and improve our training and to help shape the future of ethical guiding in Africa.

97% employment rate since 2012
Since 2012, 97% of our South African graduates of our IFGA Professional Safari Guide course (12 months) have secured employment within six months of qualifying, excluding the COVID-19 period when hiring freezes affected the industry. This success stems from our graduates being exceptionally well-prepared, equipped with practical skills and experience that go beyond theory and exceed industry expectations. This figure is based on students who chose to remain in the industry, are over the age of 21, and successfully passed all Bushwise modules.

Only Bushwise trains to NQF4
Bushwise is the only field guide training provider that includes an NQF Level 4 qualification as part of its standard courses.
Unlike other providers who offer this as an optional extra, with us, it’s built into your training from the start. Once you’ve gained a year of guiding experience, come back for reassessment and earn your full NQF4. With Bushwise, you stand out from the rest.

Recognised accreditations
Bushwise graduates leave fully qualified and industry-ready. Our nationally recognised accreditations include CATHSSETA Nature Site Guide qualifications (NQF2 & NQF4), IFGA certification (for top candidates), Cybertracker Track and Sign, firearm proficiency, Basic Wilderness First Aid, and more. On top of this, in-house courses including birding, reptile orientation, dangerous game experience, hospitality, and social media skills give our guides an extra edge in the safari industry.

Exclusive IFGA training provider
We are the only Southern African training provider that offers IFGA certification. This globally recognisable certification highlights guides who excel in soft skills such as communication, presence, storytelling, and the ability to create unforgettable guest experiences. It reflects a guide’s ability to connect, lead, and leave lasting impressions on every guest. IFGA certification helps candidates stand out and signals to lodges which guides are exceptional.
Award-winning trainers
The Bushwise team includes award-winning guides such as Nico Brits, a category winner at the Safari Guide of the Year competition in 2022. Our trainers are experts dedicated to continually expanding their knowledge and skills. Together, they bring over 150 years of combined experience across specialities like entomology, ornithology, conservation, rifle handling, botany, and more, making us a specialised and committed team.

An industry-first employment guarantee*
Bushwise offers the only employment guarantee in the industry. We’re confident in the quality of our training, so much so that we guarantee eligible South African graduates of our 12-month IFGA course will receive a job offer within twelve months of qualifying. Learn more about our guarantees here.

Ethical guiding specialists
We’re aware of the damaging practices that exist in the industry, from crowding animals, prohibiting animal movement, to poor guest management and tip-driven decisions. At Bushwise, we train guides to be ethical guiding specialists, a skill that is more important than ever in today’s wildlife and conservation industry. Our courses include a dedicated module and assessment on Ethical Guiding, ensuring students learn to lead responsibly and sustainably.

6 campuses across Big 5 wilderness areas
Bushwise students have the opportunity to train across six campuses, more than other field guide training providers in Southern Africa. This gives them a chance to experience a variety of Big 5 habitats and diverse ecosystems, with over 86,000 hectares of wilderness as their classroom.
One of our key locations is within the Greater Kruger National Park, one of Africa’s most iconic conservation areas. Here, in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve, students learn in an environment known for its rich biodiversity, strong conservation history, and some of the highest leopard densities on the continent.

Global opportunities
Bushwise opens doors to unique work placements in remote and exciting destinations like Costa Rica, Thailand, Madagascar, and more. Many of our students have leveraged their training to build careers around the world, with graduates working in places like Patagonia, the USA, Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, and beyond.
