What do you actually need to start guiding?

To officially work as a safari guide in South Africa, you need a specific set of legal documents and foundational qualifications. When you train with Bushwise, we help you secure these essential credentials directly as part of your course:

  • CATHSSETA Nature Site Guide NQF2: The official entry-level qualification, completed through Bushwise.

  • National Department of Tourism (NDT) Registration: You must register with the NDT once you have your NQF2.

  • Essential credentials: A valid first aid certificate, a driver's licence, and a Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) for driving guests.

  • Lodge-specific requirements: Depending on the reserve, you may also need rifle handling, firearm proficiency, and tracking certifications – all of which are integrated into our core Bushwise training programs.

Earn your designation
Top-performing students on the 6/12-month Bushwise course can graduate with an official IFGA designation, giving you globally transferable skills that prove your readiness for 5-star hospitality environments anywhere in the world.

The NQF4 Bushwise advantage

CATHSSETA NQF4 is a higher-level qualification designed for experienced guides. To earn it, you must complete at least one year of active guiding experience in the field.

At Bushwise, we include NQF4-level training right from the start, fully covered in your course price. This means you can return to Bushwise for your NQF4 assessment after completing your year of field experience at no additional cost – something that other training providers typically charge extra for.

Frequently asked questions

  • No. Joining a voluntary association like FGASA or IFGA is not a legal requirement to work in the industry. The only legal requirement to register and work as a professional guide in South Africa is holding your CATHSSETA qualification and registering with the National Department of Tourism (NDT).

  • You need the CATHSSETA Nature Site Guide NQF2 qualification. This is the entry-level baseline required nationwide, which you can earn directly through Bushwise.

  • CATHSSETA is the government-appointed authority that issues your legal licence to work in South Africa. IFGA is a voluntary, independent global association that assesses your soft skills, hospitality, and guest engagement to help you stand out to top-tier luxury lodges without the burden of annual membership fees.
