Whether you’re a school leaver starting your next chapter, a conservation graduate hungry for practical field experience, or an established professional ready to pivot into a meaningful new career, the IFGA Professional Safari Guide course (6–12 months) is your next step.
Train alongside award-winning experts in a hands-on environment right in the heart of Big Five territory. Step away from the screen, connect with a diverse group of international peers, and build the real-world skills, industry networks, and confidence needed to thrive as a qualified safari guide.
Course overview
The IFGA Professional Safari Guide Course (6–12 months) is your first step into the world you’re dreaming of. It’s designed to turn passionate nature lovers into skilled, confident professionals ready to work in the safari industry. Learn everything it takes to be a world-class guide – from animal behaviour and track-and-sign identification to ecology, hospitality, and delivering the ultimate guest experience.
Whether finishing school, looking to add practical field experience to a conservation degree, or switching careers entirely, this is your pathway to getting out here.
Extra training at no extra cost
Write the CATHSSETA NQF2 Nature Site Guide exam online before arriving on campus. This helps everyone – from school leavers to university graduates – start with the same basic knowledge, allowing you to jump straight into advanced NQF4-level topics on day one.
If you missed the exam or didn't pass, you’ll have the opportunity to try again while on campus, but remember, this course will be taught at the higher CATHSSETA NQF4 level, giving science grads the deeper detail they want while helping career changers and matrics catch up quickly by completing the NQF2 before arrival.
We’ve gone a step further to include the CATHSSETA NQF level 4 into the 12-month course, to help our graduates fast-track their career – something most other training providers charge extra for. Once you’ve completed a year of practical field guiding after graduation, you’ll return to campus for final exams and assessments to get your official qualification.
Take your certifications to the next level by aiming for IFGA certification during your course. Top students can earn this globally recognisable certification, at no extra cost, giving you an advantage when trying to land your first job.
Real work experience and global opportunities
Choose the 12-month course option to secure a guaranteed six-month work placement, open to all students. This placement helps those looking to add crucial field experience to a university degree, while giving those starting fresh straight out of school a direct step into the industry. It also provides a secure, proven foot in the door for anyone looking to switch career paths safely. Past students have even used this experience to launch careers across the globe, working in places like Thailand, Madagascar, and Costa Rica, or guiding in Namibia, Zambia, Patagonia, and the USA.
Train across two different ecosystems
Travel to Botswana for an included 10-day trip starting in 2027, built into the second half of your 6-month training at no extra cost. Drive across the border into Botswana’s Tuli Block and stay in the Tswehe Wildlife Reserve, where you’ll watch the landscape change completely and explore a brand-new environment!
Compare different habitats and see how wildlife behaves across regions. This experience delivers the deep, real-world insight that textbooks simply can't give!
If you aren’t able to travel, students can easily opt out of this addition.
Support after graduation and beyond
Even after your course has ended, you’ll continue to have access to the Bushwise network. This includes our connections with safari lodges across Africa, as well as our recruitment service and talent acquisition team. The goal is to help you take your first or next step into the wildlife industry with guidance and support, connecting you with opportunities that align with your interests, strengths, and career goals.
Why study with Bushwise?
Bushwise was founded in 2006 by a passionate conservationist who, after a long and rewarding career in the field, saw a growing need for professional, qualified field guides to help protect and sustain our natural environment.
That same passion continues to guide us today. Since our early days, we’ve been committed to producing top-tier graduates for the safari industry, known for their skill, ethics, and deep respect for nature. It's this dedication that drives us to constantly refine and improve our training and to help shape the future of ethical guiding in Africa.

97% employment rate since 2012
Since 2012, 97% of South African graduates from the 12-month course have found work within six months of qualifying (excluding the COVID-19 period). This success rate takes the guesswork out of leaving a steady job or finishing school, proving that lodges actively seek out Bushwise-trained professionals. (Based on students over 21 who passed all modules and chose to stay in the industry).

Only Bushwise trains to NQF4
Step out of the crowd with the only standard course that builds an NQF Level 4 qualification directly into the program. Instead of paying extra for this later, like most other training providers, you’ll learn at this advanced level from day one. This adds the depth needed to back up an environmental or conservation degree, while fast-tracking newcomers to top industry standards. Gain a year of guiding experience, return for final assessments, and lock in the full qualification.

Recognised accreditations
Bushwise graduates leave fully qualified and industry-ready. Our nationally recognised accreditations include CATHSSETA Nature Site Guide qualifications (NQF2 & NQF4), IFGA certification (for top candidates), Cybertracker Track and Sign, firearm proficiency, Basic Wilderness First Aid, and more. On top of this, in-house courses including birding, reptile orientation, dangerous game experience, hospitality, and social media skills give our guides an extra edge in the safari industry.

Exclusive IFGA training provider
We are the only Southern African training provider that offers IFGA certification. This globally recognisable certification highlights guides who excel in soft skills such as communication, presence, storytelling, and the ability to create unforgettable guest experiences. It reflects a guide’s ability to connect, lead, and leave lasting impressions on every guest. IFGA certification helps candidates stand out and signals to lodges which guides are exceptional.
Award-winning trainers
The Bushwise team includes award-winning guides such as Nico Brits, a category winner at the Safari Guide of the Year competition in 2022. Our trainers are experts dedicated to continually expanding their knowledge and skills. Together, they bring over 150 years of combined experience across specialities like entomology, ornithology, conservation, rifle handling, botany, and more, making us a specialised and committed team.

An industry-first employment guarantee*
Bushwise offers the only employment guarantee in the industry. We are so confident in the quality of our training that we guarantee eligible South African graduates of our 12-month course will receive a job offer within twelve months of qualifying. This provides a secure safety net, ensuring your hard work and investment lead directly to a real professional path.

Ethical guiding specialists
We’re aware of the damaging practices that exist in the industry, from crowding animals, prohibiting animal movement, to poor guest management and tip-driven decisions. At Bushwise, we train guides to be ethical guiding specialists, a skill that is more important than ever in today’s wildlife and conservation industry. Our courses include a dedicated module and assessment on Ethical Guiding, ensuring students learn to lead responsibly and sustainably.
